The Archdeacon did everything in his power to provide an adequate supply of schools and teachers for the youth of the parish.    He was most anxious that a good and sound Christian Education was available to all.    This was the most effective way in which to combat Proselytism which was rampant in his day.  When he commenced in the Parish of Knock & Aghamore in 1867 there were three schools, one in Knock and two in Aghamore, all taught by a total of six teachers.    He set about to build schools and employ teachers to aid and assist him in eradicating vice and instructing the ignorant.    Such an undertaking without State aid or any other funds at this disposal was one from which a man of ordinary determination might shrink, but Father Cavanagh’s never-failing confidence in God buoyed him in his firm resolution of getting a supply of schools built.    On his death there were thirty-two national teachers employed under his jurisdiction in Knock-Aghamore Parish.
